The Costa Brava's green hinterland of cork oak and pine looks lush, but the tramontana wind makes it highly fire-prone. In July 2012 a fire near La Jonquera and Portbou burned almost 14,000 hectares in the Alt Empordà.
This map covers the province of Girona from Portbou to Blanes.
Hotspots come from the VIIRS instruments on NASA FIRMS satellites (NOAA-20, NOAA-21 and Suomi NPP) and are cross-checked against Copernicus EFFIS. A hotspot is a heat detection, not a confirmed fire: industrial sites, solar farms and permanent burners are filtered out automatically.
Alt Empordà and Cap de Creus
The north near the French border: dry scrub and cork oak exposed to the tramontana.
Les Gavarres and Baix Empordà
Wooded hills between Palafrugell, Begur and Girona with scattered housing.
Selva coast: Lloret and Tossa
Steep pine-covered coast; fires are rarer but roads are narrow.
