Provence combines garrigue, pine woods and a fierce, dry mistral — a recipe for fast-moving fires. Around Marseille and Martigues fires break out almost every summer; in August 2020 more than 1,000 hectares burned near Martigues and in July 2025 a fire reached Marseille's northern districts.
This map covers Bouches-du-Rhône, Vaucluse and southern Alpes-de-Haute-Provence — ideal for holidays in the Luberon, around Avignon or in the Camargue.
Hotspots come from the VIIRS instruments on NASA FIRMS satellites (NOAA-20, NOAA-21 and Suomi NPP) and are cross-checked against Copernicus EFFIS. A hotspot is a heat detection, not a confirmed fire: industrial sites, solar farms and permanent burners are filtered out automatically.
Marseille, Martigues and the Côte Bleue
Dry limestone hills right next to housing; fires often start along roads and are driven seawards by the mistral.
Luberon and Vaucluse
Oak coppice and garrigue in the Luberon park and Monts de Vaucluse, regularly closed in summer.
Sainte-Victoire
The ridge east of Aix-en-Provence, popular with hikers and strictly regulated on high-risk days.
Is there a wildfire in Provence right now?
The map shows every satellite detection in recent hours. Press Live refresh for the newest data.
Are the Provence massifs open?
The prefectures publish daily (around 6 pm for the next day) which massifs are accessible.
Is the mistral dangerous?
Yes. It is dry and can exceed 80 km/h, pushing fires rapidly south towards the coast.
When is the risk highest?
July and August, especially on mistral days after a long dry spell.
Which number do I call?
112 or 18.
How does this differ from the South of France map?
That map covers the whole south coast; this one zooms into Provence itself.
How do I see if a wildfire is close to my campsite or holiday address in Provence?
Use the location finder on this map: type your destination, village or campsite name, or tap "Use my location". The map instantly shows the distance in kilometres to the nearest active hotspot, and you can switch on alerts for fires within 5 to 100 km. Every search gets its own link, so you can share the situation around your own address with family or fellow travellers.
