Wildfires in Attica – current situation

Attica, the region around Athens, has seen Europe's deadliest wildfires in recent decades. In July 2018 104 people died at Mati; in 2021 much of the Parnitha and Varibobi forests burned, and in August 2024 a fire ran from Varnavas into Athens' northern suburbs.

This map covers all of Attica, including the Marathon and Rafina coast and the peninsula to Cape Sounion.

Hotspots come from the VIIRS instruments on NASA FIRMS satellites (NOAA-20, NOAA-21 and Suomi NPP) and are cross-checked against Copernicus EFFIS. A hotspot is a heat detection, not a confirmed fire: industrial sites, solar farms and permanent burners are filtered out automatically.

High-risk areas in Attica

Parnitha and the northern suburbs

Mountain forest north of Athens bordering Acharnes and Varibobi; fires directly threaten housing.

Penteli, Marathon and Varnavas

Pine woods among villas in the north-east; the meltemi drives fire towards Mati and Rafina.

South Attica and Sounion

Low scrub-covered hills along the coast to Sounion and Lavrio.
